Two childhood friends team up to make the blind see in Detroit, metro-Detroit and across Michigan.

Jason Waechter and Walter “Wally” Cukrowski went to St. Hugo grade school together in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. They became the best of friends. After high school, they went their separate ways and years later Jason became a lawyer and Wally became a doctor.

Recently, Jason was preparing his biggest-ever case for trial. Before the trial started, Jason promised himself to “give back” in a significant and meaningful way if he won. Won, he did-- Jason tried and won a Michigan record high jury verdict for his client.

After seeing videos posted by the biggest social media influencer, Mr. Beast, about giving the life-changing cataract surgery to 40 people in Jacksonville, Florida, Waechter was touched. He was also baffled that people were blind in America and stayed that way because they could not afford a procedure that takes less than ½ hour per eye and typically cost less than $5,000.

“The videos Mr. Beast posted were so moving and inspiring they stuck with me.” said Jason. “When thinking about how I could give back with earmarking a portion of my legal fee from this case, this is what immediately came to mind.” This inspired me to form a nonprofit that would provide the same sight-restoring surgeries for people experiencing financial hardship in our community.

Jason’s next thought was, “I wonder if my old friend Wally could advise me on this.” Wally not only advised, but volunteered himself and Michigan Eyecare Institute’s surgery center to make it all happen here in Detroit, Metro-Detroit and across Michigan.

Waechter’s nonprofit, Vision of Justice, pays the hard costs for the eye procedures and a very discounted surgical fee. “Wally and his team are essentially doing this all pro bono. Without them and their surgical center, none of this could be possible. They are the true heroes here,” added Jason.
